Sikumba Urges Youths to Embrace Skills and Entrepreneurship for a Brighter Future

Minister of Tourism Rodney Malindi Sikumba has called on young people across the country to rise above substance abuse, peer pressure and unemployment by embracing skills development, innovation and entrepreneurship as pathways to a brighter future.

Speaking during Youth Day commemorations held at David Livingstone Secondary School in Livingstone, Mr Sikumba encouraged young people to believe in their potential and take advantage of opportunities being created by government to build sustainable livelihoods.

The Minister said this year’s theme, “Arise and Soar,” should be seen as more than a slogan but rather a call to action for young people to rise with confidence, purpose and vision while actively participating in national development.

Mr Sikumba observed that although the youth remain Zambia’s greatest asset, many young people face challenges such as unemployment, mental health pressures and the growing influence of social media, which sometimes promotes unrealistic standards of success and lifestyle.

He warned that some young people may be tempted to turn to harmful substances as a way of coping with frustration and disappointment. However, he urged them to channel their energy into productive ventures capable of transforming their lives and communities.

The Minister stressed that overcoming such challenges requires courage, creativity and determination, adding that young people should never allow their circumstances to define their destiny.

Mr Sikumba highlighted that government programmes under the Constituency Development Fund continue to empower youths with vocational skills in areas such as agriculture, tailoring, welding and mechanics. He noted that grants and loans are also being provided to support youth-led businesses and entrepreneurship initiatives aimed at creating employment opportunities.

He further explained that digital skills programmes are being introduced in selected districts to equip young people with knowledge in digital marketing and online entrepreneurship, enabling them to participate meaningfully in the growing digital economy.

The Minister also commended initiatives that promote youth participation in governance, citing the Livingstone Junior Council as an example of a platform that allows young people to contribute to community development and decision-making processes.

Mr Sikumba encouraged young people to prioritise their mental health and support one another, noting that real strength lies in speaking openly about challenges and seeking help when necessary.

He urged the youth to embrace unity, innovation and integrity as they work towards building sustainable livelihoods and contributing to Zambia’s development.

According to the Minister, when young people rise and realise their full potential, families, communities and ultimately the nation will also rise.
