Learners Guaranteed Free Meals as School Feeding Programme Continues
Ministry of Education has clarified concerns raised by a video circulating on social media in which a woman alleged that pupils were being charged K20 to access the School Feeding Programme.
The Ministry emphasised that the programme, implemented under Government’s Free Education Policy, is entirely free and that no learner should be asked to pay any fee to benefit from it.
Following the video, local education authorities in Kasama District were engaged to verify the claims and investigate the matter. The Ministry has warned that appropriate action will be taken should any school or official be found in violation of Government policy.
“The Free Education Policy strictly prohibits charging feeding fees in schools participating in the School Feeding Programme. Any such practice is illegal and undermines Government’s commitment to equitable access to education and learner welfare,” said Kelvin Mambwe, Permanent Secretary for Educational Services.
Parents and the public are encouraged to report any school demanding payment for the programme to the nearest District Education Board Secretary office or directly to the Ministry.
The Ministry reiterated that the School Feeding Programme remains a critical intervention to improve learner nutrition, boost school attendance, and enhance academic performance.
School administrators have been reminded to strictly adhere to policy and ensure all eligible learners have free access to the programme.
