K3.5 Million Injected into 2026 KK Marathon

The Government, through the Ministry of Tourism, has expressed appreciation to the Kaunda family for consistently honouring the legacy of Zambia’s First Republican President, Kenneth Kaunda, through initiatives such as the Kenneth Kaunda Marathon.

Speaking during the 2026 marathon kit launch, Minister of Tourism Rodney Sikumba described the event as a practical expression of the recently unveiled “Zambia Moves” brand, noting that it reflects the country’s commitment to turning national vision into action.

Mr Sikumba emphasised that an event of such scale does not take place in isolation, but relies on dedicated partners who share a belief in building a healthier and more vibrant nation anchored in unity and peace.

He commended key sponsors, including Stanbic Bank Zambia and Professional Insurance Corporation Zambia, who have collectively contributed K3.5 million towards the event. He also praised the organisers, including the National Museums Board of Zambia and the Kaunda family, for their role in ensuring the marathon’s continued success.

“This event aligns perfectly with our national agenda to promote sports tourism and public health. Government remains committed to providing a supportive policy framework and ensuring a safe hosting environment. We regard this marathon as a flagship national programme with the potential to attract participants from across the SADC region and beyond,” Mr Sikumba said.

Meanwhile, Moses Siame, Managing Director of Professional Insurance Corporation Zambia, said the institution’s support is rooted in its respect for the life and values of Dr Kaunda.

He described the company’s involvement as both a duty and an honour in upholding principles of unity, resilience, service and nation-building.

Mwindwa Siakalima, Chief Executive of Stanbic Bank Zambia, noted that the marathon reflects the bank’s belief in shared progress and strong, united communities, reaffirming the institution’s pride in playing a leading role in the 2026 edition.

Additionally, Katai Chola, President of the Lusaka Fitness Squad, highlighted the organisation’s role in driving national participation and expanding the marathon’s reach.

The Kenneth Kaunda Marathon, held in honour of Zambia’s founding father, is scheduled to take place on 28 April 2026 and is expected to attract both local and international participants in a celebration of health, unity and national pride.
