Mulungushi Textiles to Reopen After Two Decades

The long-dormant Mulungushi Textile Factory in Kabwe is set to resume full operations next month, nearly 20 years after it shut down, marking a major milestone in Zambia’s industrial revival efforts.

The reopening comes just ten months after the installation of new state-of-the-art machinery valued at approximately US$140 million. Minister of Commerce, Trade and Industry, Chipoka Mulenga, confirmed that President Hakainde Hichilema is expected to officially commission the revived plant following a successful test run of the equipment.

Mr Mulenga said the factory, now fitted with modern AI-powered production systems, will manufacture uniforms and a wide range of textile products locally.

He noted that the facility is expected to create between 400 and 500 jobs, delivering a significant economic boost to Kabwe and surrounding communities.

He further disclosed that full printing tests will commence within the next two weeks, starting with the production of the Zambian national flag and the Coat of Arms.

The minister reaffirmed government’s commitment to prioritising young Zambians for employment and skills development at the facility, in line with broader efforts to promote youth empowerment and industrial skills transfer.

Mr Mulenga made the remarks after witnessing a successful machinery test run at the plant in Kabwe.

Meanwhile, Central Province Permanent Secretary Milner Mwanakampwe said the reopening of Mulungushi Textiles aligns with the province’s wider strategy to position itself as a key industrial hub.

Mulungushi Textiles General Manager Emmanuel Sementi confirmed that all obsolete equipment has been removed and that the factory is fully prepared to commence full-colour production.
