ERB Approves ZMW 3.74 Billion in Energy Licences and Permits
The Energy Regulation Board (ERB) has approved 42 licences and construction permits worth a total of ZMW 3.74 billion (US$189 million), marking a significant boost to Zambia’s energy sector. The approvals cover both the renewable energy and downstream petroleum subsectors, signalling broad-based growth across the energy value chain.
The ERB Licensing Committee granted the approvals following its meeting on 15 January 2026, reflecting continued investor confidence and the effectiveness of Zambia’s regulatory framework in promoting compliant and sustainable energy investments.
In the downstream petroleum sector, the board authorised the construction of three new retail service stations and the commissioning of four additional stations, enhancing the accessibility of petroleum products nationwide.
The ERB also approved the licensing of 205 petroleum fuel tankers, strengthening the supply chain and supporting the country’s energy security.
Meanwhile, in the renewable energy subsector, the board approved 12 licences for the importation, supply, installation, and maintenance of renewable energy equipment and technologies. These approvals support the deployment of decentralised, clean, and sustainable energy solutions, in line with national energy policy objectives.
“All licences and permits were issued in accordance with the Energy Regulation Act No. 12 of 2019 to ensure compliance,” said Mrs Namukolo Kasumpa, Manager – Public Relations, ERB. “The level of investment demonstrates the continued participation of the private sector and reinforces the importance of a clear, predictable, and transparent regulatory environment for energy infrastructure development.”
She reaffirmed ERB’s commitment to effective regulation, with a focus on compliance, operational efficiency, consumer protection, and long-term sustainability in the Zambian energy sector.
