NRDC 20MW Solar Project Launched to Boost Agricultural Training and Energy Security

The Ministry of Agriculture took part in the groundbreaking ceremony of a 20-megawatt solar power project at the Natural Resources Development College (NRDC), a move set to strengthen Zambia’s agricultural education and energy infrastructure.

The event was officiated by the Minister of Energy, Honourable Makozo Chikote, and attended by senior government officials including Attorney General Mulilo Kabesha, representatives from ZESCO Limited, Kiyona Energy Limited, cooperating partners, and NRDC management. Munali Member of Parliament, Honourable Mike Mposha, was also present.

Representing the Ministry of Agriculture, Acting Permanent Secretary for Technical Services, Dr Chizumba Shepande, highlighted the strategic importance of the project for Zambia’s agricultural sector.

“This 20-megawatt solar power facility will enhance NRDC’s capacity to provide practical, hands-on agricultural training, ensure stable power for laboratories and research facilities, and support irrigation systems for demonstration fields,” Dr Shepande said.

He emphasised NRDC’s critical role in skills development, innovation, and applied agricultural research, noting that high-quality training at the institution directly influences productivity, sustainability, and resilience across the agricultural sector.

“The project will position NRDC as a centre of excellence in climate-smart agriculture, enabling expanded training in irrigation practices and renewable energy applications at a time when the sector faces increasing climate variability,” Dr Shepande added.

The Acting Permanent Secretary further stressed that the benefits of the project extend beyond the college, with graduates expected to transfer knowledge and skills to farming communities nationwide, contributing to improved productivity and national food security.

The Ministry commended Kiyona Energy Limited and ZESCO Limited for partnering with the Government to deliver a project that advances agricultural education, renewable energy adoption, and national development.

The NRDC 20-megawatt solar power project is anticipated to provide a reliable energy supply while supporting the long-term transformation of Zambia’s agricultural sector.
