MTN MoMo Introduces Affordable Transfers to Europe, UK and Canada
MTN Mobile Money Zambia has launched a new international remittance service that allows customers to send money directly from their MoMo wallets to bank accounts in the European Union, the United Kingdom and Canada, positioning the service as the most affordable international money transfer option currently available in Zambia.
The launch makes MTN MoMo the first mobile money provider in the country to offer direct wallet-to-bank international transfers into these key global markets. Customers can now send funds securely and instantly using globally recognised banking identifiers such as SWIFT, IBAN, Sort Codes and Routing Numbers, via the MoMo App or by dialling *115#.
The new service marks a significant expansion of MTN Mobile Money Zambia’s international remittance offering, extending its reach beyond South Africa and India to include Europe and North America. The company said the development reflects its commitment to delivering accessible, inclusive and cost-effective financial solutions.
MTN MoMo said the service is designed to address the high costs traditionally associated with international money transfers. While conventional transfer channels typically charge a minimum of around US$30 per transaction, the MoMo service enables customers to send money internationally for as little as K5, allowing for smaller and more frequent transfers without financial strain.
The service is expected to support a growing number of Zambians making international payments for education, medical services, business transactions, trade and family support, while eliminating the need for physical visits to banks or reliance on informal transfer channels.
Commenting on the launch, MTN Mobile Money Zambia Chief Executive Officer, Mr Komba Malukutila, said the service responds directly to customer demand for faster, more affordable and fully compliant global money transfers.
“With this launch, MoMo customers can now send money directly to global bank accounts with confidence and ease,” Mr Malukutila said. “As the most affordable remittance service in Zambia, MoMo removes the high costs that have traditionally limited international transfers, enabling customers to send money globally for as low as K5, whenever they need to.”
He added that the service integrates secure international payment systems that meet Exchange Bureau and Other Payments (EBOP) compliance requirements, ensuring transactions are fast, regulated and transparent.
MTN MoMo said the introduction of the service further strengthens its evolution from a local payments platform into a comprehensive digital financial services provider capable of supporting customers’ global financial needs.
Customers can access the service through the MoMo App or by dialling *115#, where they can initiate international bank transfers by entering the required bank details and completing transactions within minutes.
The company said the launch forms part of its broader ambition to build a modern, inclusive and borderless digital financial ecosystem that connects Zambians to opportunities across the world.
