Zambia Accelerates Mineral Discovery with 52.8% Aerial Survey Completion
The Government has announced that Zambia’s nationwide aerial mineral mapping survey has reached 52.8 per cent completion, marking a major milestone in efforts to unlock the country’s mineral potential and attract new investment.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development, Permanent Secretary Dr Hapenga M. Kabeta said the high-resolution airborne geophysical survey is modernising Zambia’s geological database and opening up new opportunities for mineral exploration, particularly in previously under-explored areas.
Dr Kabeta said the survey is central to Government’s strategy to position Zambia as a premier mining investment destination. He noted that beyond its vast copper resources, the country holds significant potential in critical minerals such as cobalt, lithium and nickel, which are essential to the global energy transition.
The Permanent Secretary made the remarks during a courtesy call by the Swiss Ambassador to Zambia, Mr Stéphane Rey, at the Ministry headquarters on 23 January 2026. He said Zambia offers policy stability, transparency and protection of private investment, making it attractive to both large- and small-scale mining ventures.
Dr Kabeta added that Government is strengthening partnerships with reputable mining firms to accelerate exploration, promote value addition and support technology transfer, while ensuring sustainable mining practices and benefits for local communities.
Ambassador Rey expressed optimism about Zambia’s investment prospects, describing the country’s strategic location, rich natural resources and growing economy as key attractions for Swiss investors.
He also informed the Permanent Secretary of an upcoming visit to Zambia by the Swiss State Secretary for Economic Affairs, Ms Helene Budliger Artieda, which is expected to further strengthen diplomatic and economic relations between Zambia and Switzerland.
The Ministry said the completion of the aerial mapping survey will provide critical data to guide investment decisions and support the long-term development of Zambia’s mining sector.
