DRC Gov’t Pledges Security for International Truck Drivers

The Government of the Democratic Republic of Congo has committed to providing adequate security for international truck drivers to prevent attacks while transporting goods through the country.

The resolution was made during the 14th Session of the Democratic Republic of Congo and Zambia Joint Permanent Commission on Defence and Security, which was held in Lubumbashi from 12 to 16 January 2026.

According to a communiqué issued at the close of the meeting, the Commission acknowledged the growing security challenges faced by international truck drivers transiting through the DRC, following reports of recent attacks along key transport routes.

The Commission urged the DRC Government to strengthen security measures in areas where such incidents have been reported, stressing that improved protection is essential to safeguarding cross-border commerce and promoting international trade.

The communiqué stated that the Commission agreed the DRC should enhance security along high-risk trucking corridors in line with international standards and regional protocols governing the safety of cross-border transport workers.

The two countries further emphasised that attacks on truck drivers should not be allowed to disrupt trade and economic cooperation between nations.

Meanwhile, the Democratic Republic of Congo conveyed its goodwill to Zambia ahead of the General Elections scheduled for August this year, wishing the country continued peace and stability.

On regional security, Zambia and the DRC expressed concern over the ongoing insecurity in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo and reaffirmed their support for regional and international efforts aimed at restoring peace and addressing the resulting humanitarian challenges.

The communiqué was signed by Zambia’s Minister of Defence, Honourable Ambrose Lwiji Lufuma MP, and the Democratic Republic of Congo Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, Security, Decentralisation and Traditional Affairs, Honourable Lukoo Bihango Jacquemain Shabani.
