Africa CDC Launches Bold Plan to Protect Health from Climate Change

The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) has launched a comprehensive Strategic Framework for Climate Change and Health 2025, aimed at strengthening climate-resilient health systems across Africa.

The framework highlights the urgent public health threats posed by climate change, which globally is projected to cause 14.5 million additional deaths, over 2 billion healthy life years lost, and $12.5 trillion in economic losses by 2050.

In Africa, studies show that 56% of more than 2,000 public health events between 2001 and 2021 are linked to climate-related factors, including extreme weather, shifting disease patterns, food insecurity, and waterborne illnesses.

Africa CDC’s Director General, H.E. Dr Jean Kaseya, emphasised that the framework offers a continent-wide roadmap for coordinated, evidence-based action. “This framework will equip policymakers, health institutions, and communities to anticipate, adapt to, and mitigate the adverse health effects of climate change,” he said.

The strategy is guided by key principles including the One Health Approach, partnerships, sustained investment, advanced technology, community engagement, accountability, and equity. By leveraging these principles, Africa CDC aims to build resilient health systems, foster innovation, and strengthen institutional capacity across member states.

Dr Kaseya further noted that successful implementation will require collaboration, political will, and innovative financing. The framework also stresses the importance of integrating continental, regional, and national efforts to enhance climate and health preparedness.

“This is a pivotal step in safeguarding public health and building climate resilience across Africa. With concerted action and shared commitment, we can ensure that our communities are better protected against the growing health impacts of climate change,” Dr Kaseya added.

The Strategic Framework for Climate Change and Health 2025 is available for download on the Africa CDC website and serves as a guiding tool for governments, health authorities, and development partners in shaping Africa’s climate-resilient health agenda.
