Zambia Reaffirms Commitment to Peace in Great Lakes Region

Zambia has reaffirmed its dedication to promoting peace and security in the Great Lakes Region as Chiefs of Defence Forces (CDFs) from the 12 member states of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) convene in Livingstone.

Speaking at the official opening of the Extraordinary Meeting, Ministry of Defence Permanent Secretary, Mr Maambo Haamaundu, said Zambia stands firmly behind regional peace efforts.

“The security of one member state is inseparable from the security of all,” Mr Haamaundu stated. “Zambia pledges to work tirelessly for peace in the Democratic Republic of Congo and the wider region, supporting peace processes, contributing to regional initiatives, and hosting platforms for dialogue and cooperation. Our ultimate goal is lasting peace and security for the region.”

He urged the attending CDFs to consider the hopes and aspirations of millions of men, women, and children who rely on them for protection.

Mr Haamaundu highlighted the complex security threats the region faces, including armed groups that destabilise communities and cross-border criminal networks engaged in the illicit trafficking of arms, minerals, and people.

Lieutenant General Kabanda Wakasanda Francois, the meeting’s Chairperson, noted that the region remains characterised by volatile peace and increasing security uncertainty, emphasising the need for frank and coordinated collaboration among defence and security forces.

“We urge you to examine, with a critical and collaborative spirit, the various topics on the agenda, knowing that the resulting recommendations will contribute effectively to the objectives outlined in the pact of our regional organisation,” he said.

ICGLR Executive Secretary Dr Mubita Luwabelwa expressed deep concern over the deteriorating security and humanitarian situation in eastern DRC. He pointed out that despite the signing of the Washington Accord last month, the capture of the town of Uvira has led to mass displacements of civilians.

Lieutenant General Geoffrey Choongo Zyeele of the Zambian Army is hosting the meeting, which aims to identify coordinated solutions to strengthen regional security and address ongoing humanitarian challenges.
