Zambia, Malawi Launch First Maize Export Under Bilateral Agreement
The Governments of the Republic of Zambia and the Republic of Malawi have officially flagged off the first consignment of maize grain for export to Malawi, marking a major step in strengthening bilateral cooperation and regional food security.
The flag-off ceremony was held in Chipata, Eastern Province, where Zambia’s Minister of Agriculture, Honourable Reuben P. Mtolo, MP, confirmed that the export follows the successful conclusion of a Government-to-Government maize supply agreement between the two countries.
Under the programme, Zambia will export a total of 200,000 metric tonnes of maize, largely sourced from Eastern Province, with Chipata as a key collection and dispatch point.
Hon. Mtolo said the initiative reflects the leadership and vision of His Excellency Mr Hakainde Hichilema, President of the Republic of Zambia, working in close partnership with the Government of Malawi to promote regional solidarity and ensure food security.
He assured the public that the export will not undermine Zambia’s domestic food security, stating that the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) continues to manage national strategic reserves responsibly.
He added that FRA has opened community maize sales across the country to guarantee continued access to maize at community level.
The Minister also addressed farmers, reaffirming Government’s commitment to settling all outstanding payments to suppliers who sold maize to FRA, with all balances expected to be cleared by 10 January 2026.
Hon. Mtolo further praised farmers and stakeholders for the successful rollout of the 100 per cent Electronic Voucher (e-Voucher) system under the Farmer Input Support Programme (FISP).
He disclosed that 1,013,747 farmers, representing 98.96 per cent, have redeemed their farming inputs for the current planting season.
Speaking on behalf of Malawi, Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development, Honourable Roza F. Mbilizi, expressed gratitude to the Government and people of Zambia for the support.
She described the maize export arrangement as a clear demonstration of the strong and enduring bilateral relations between the two neighbouring countries.
Hon. Mbilizi noted that the cooperation reflects a shared commitment to safeguarding food security and building resilience against climate-related and economic challenges.
Both Governments reaffirmed their dedication to continued collaboration in agriculture, regional trade and food security, for the mutual benefit of the people of Zambia and Malawi.
