MTN MoMo Virtual Card Launch Puts Zambia on Global E-Commerce Map

Zambia has officially joined the ranks of global players in e-commerce with the launch of the MTN Mobile Money (MoMo) Virtual Card powered by Mastercard, a milestone described by Minister of Technology and Science, Felix Mutati, as transformative for how Zambians live, trade and connect with the world.

Speaking at the launch held at the InterContinental Hotel in Lusaka, Mutati said the new product removes long-standing barriers that previously excluded ordinary citizens from global trade. He noted that even individuals in remote areas, such as Kaputa, can now securely buy, sell, export and make payments online.

“This launch simply means that Zambia has gone global in e-commerce; that small trader in Kaputa can now participate in global trade securely, conveniently and with full control,” Mutati said.

The Minister praised MTN Zambia for consistently delivering digital firsts, including the rollout of 5G, the introduction of the affordable Alolam smartphone, and now the MoMo Virtual Card, which aligns perfectly with the government’s digital transformation agenda.

He added that the government has deliberately removed barriers to private sector investment, including scrapping import duties on digital infrastructure and easing regulatory bottlenecks, such as lengthy tower approvals, to accelerate digital access for citizens.

Meanwhile, MTN MoMo Zambia Managing Director, Komba Malukutila, said the launch demonstrates the company’s commitment to supporting government’s vision of economic empowerment through digital solutions.

“At MTN, we believe everybody deserves the benefits of a modern, connected life, and this launch is about deepening financial inclusion, empowering SMEs to grow beyond borders and enabling citizens to fully participate in a digital economy,” Malukutila said.

He noted that the MoMo Virtual Card was made possible through collaboration with global partners, including Mastercard, Network International, and UBA, to ensure Zambians have access to world-class payment solutions.

The launch also featured the unveiling of MTN’s next-generation Mobile Money app, described by MTN Mobile Money Chief Products Officer, Chikondi Mwanza, as a complete redesign of the platform addressing customer feedback on usability, security and convenience.

“The MoMo Virtual Card allows users to make payments online beyond Zambian borders,” Mr Mwanza said. “Previously, mobile money payments were limited to local transactions. Now, our customers can pay globally via the next-gen app or USSD, giving them control, security and convenience.”

He explained that each virtual card comes with a unique 16-digit code, CVC number and OTP verification for every transaction, ensuring strong security. As a prepaid card, it allows users to load only the funds they need, protecting their main accounts from potential fraud.

The virtual card also adds convenience by consolidating payment tools within a single mobile device, removing the need for multiple physical cards. Customers can now access online subscriptions, e-commerce platforms and international services safely and efficiently.

“The virtual card means Zambians no longer have to rely on informal or risky methods to access online services,” Mr Mwanza said. “It is about security, control and convenience empowering our customers to participate fully in the global digital economy.”
