Zambia and Serbia Explore New Frontiers in Bilateral Cooperation
The Minister of Technology and Science, Hon. Felix Chipota Mutati, MP, has held a strategic meeting with the Ambassador of Serbia, Her Excellency Jasna Zrnović, to deepen bilateral cooperation and identify new areas of partnership aligned with Zambia’s national development priorities.
During the meeting, the two parties reaffirmed the strong historic ties between Zambia and Serbia, recalling collaborations dating back to the leadership of President Kenneth Kaunda and President Josip Broz Tito.
Landmark projects such as the Kafue Dam, George Hydropower infrastructure, Findeco House, the original Mulungushi Conference Centre, and the first University Teaching Hospital all built with Serbian expertise, remain lasting symbols of the long-standing friendship.
Minister Mutati underscored the need to reinforce Zambia’s research and development ecosystem, noting that the country does not lack innovative ideas but requires stronger pathways for commercialisation and practical application.
Enhanced collaboration with Serbia, he said, would help accelerate innovation in key sectors, particularly energy and agriculture.
Zambia expressed interest in partnering with Serbia to establish a Centre of Excellence in Agriculture. The envisioned centre aims to modernise farming practices, strengthen technical skills, and promote the adoption of cutting-edge agricultural technologies to drive productivity and sustainability.
The Minister also highlighted the importance of developing specialised human capital to meet Zambia’s evolving energy needs. He welcomed Serbia’s support in offering scholarships in priority energy-related fields, a move that will help build a highly skilled workforce capable of contributing to the nation’s technological transformation.
The meeting concluded with both sides expressing commitment to advancing cooperation and exploring additional opportunities that will contribute to Zambia’s economic growth and long-term development.
