Zambia Reaffirms Commitment to Sustainable Resource Management at UNEA-7
Zambia has reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable resource management and strengthened participation in global environmental governance during the Seventh Open-Ended Committee of Permanent Representatives (OECPR-7), held in Nairobi from 1 to 6 December 2025.
The meeting serves as a key preparatory platform for the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-7), taking place from 8 to 12 December 2025.
OECPR-7 provides member states with an opportunity to negotiate draft resolutions ahead of UNEA-7, the world’s highest-level decision-making body on environmental matters.
This year’s Assembly convenes under the theme “Advancing Sustainable Solutions for a Resilient Planet”, with a focus on accelerating global action to address the triple planetary crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution.
Zambia’s delegation was led by His Excellency Alfred Musemuna, High Commissioner to Kenya and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), representing Minister of Green Economy and Environment Hon. Mike Elton Mposha.
Delivering Zambia’s statement during the opening plenary, Ambassador Musemuna reaffirmed the country’s commitment to sustainable development and effective environmental governance.
He expressed Zambia’s strong support for draft resolutions on the environmentally sound management of minerals and metals, and guidance promoting circularity in mineral resource use.
Over the coming days, Zambia will participate in negotiations on issues of national and global priority, including improving governance of minerals and metals, advancing circularity, and contributing to discussions shaping UNEP’s strategic direction.
