Emirates SkyCargo, LODD Autonomous Team Up for Drone Delivery
Emirates SkyCargo and Abu Dhabi-based LODD Autonomous have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the 2025 Dubai Airshow, marking a major step towards the development of next-generation drone-powered cargo solutions.
The agreement, signed by Badr Abbas, Divisional Senior Vice President of Emirates SkyCargo, and Rashid Al Manai, Chief Executive Officer of LODD Autonomous, will see both companies collaborate to validate the use of VTOL (Vertical Take-Off and Landing) aircraft across Emirates’ extensive global network.
The partnership includes feasibility studies, regulatory engagement, and live demonstrations, with a view to potential commercial deployment in regional and international markets by the end of 2027.
This collaboration follows the recent successful test flight of LODD’s Hili, a fully autonomous, hybrid heavy-lift cargo aircraft capable of carrying payloads of up to 250 kilograms over distances of 700 kilometres. The aircraft is now being considered for integration into Emirates SkyCargo’s operations across its dual airport hub.
Badr Abbas said: “This partnership with LODD reflects our commitment to introducing innovative solutions that address our customers’ transportation challenges. Emerging technologies are shaping the next era of logistics, and Emirates SkyCargo is proud to be at the forefront, contributing our experience to the development of innovations that create tangible impact.”
Rashid Al Manai added: “Our collaboration with Emirates SkyCargo combines LODD Autonomous’s cutting-edge technology with the UAE’s vision for scalable and sustainable logistics. Together, we aim to accelerate the adoption of drone-powered solutions, reducing delivery times, expanding reach, and strengthening the UAE’s position as a global logistics hub.”
Emirates SkyCargo, with a network spanning over 150 destinations and a fleet of more than 260 widebody passenger and freighter aircraft, has consistently sought to set benchmarks in global logistics. Earlier this year, the airline launched Emirates Courier Express, a door-to-door delivery service designed to enhance cross-border eCommerce.
