Zambia Showcases Gemstone Potential as Savvy Gems Opens New Showroom at CIIE
Zambia’s gemstone industry has received a major international boost with the official opening of Savvy Gems’ new showroom on the sidelines of the 8th China International Import Expo (CIIE). The launch was officiated by the Minister of Commerce, Trade and Industry, Hon Chipoka Mulenga, MP, who praised the company for showcasing Zambia’s rich mineral heritage on the global stage.
Hon Mulenga said Zambia’s economic reforms are now translating into tangible opportunities, with new projects emerging across multiple sectors in line with government’s commitment to sustainable development and inclusive growth.
He noted that the mining industry is benefiting significantly, particularly through increased support to small-scale miners (SSMs), whose participation is being strengthened to ensure they contribute meaningfully to the wider economy.
“President Hakainde Hichilema has consistently emphasised his vision of expanding the economy through partnerships and joint ventures,” he said. “This vision is being realised as Zambia deepens cooperation with international partners, especially China.”
The Minister announced that Zambia will host a Gemstone Expo in early 2026, positioning the country as one of the world’s leading producers of precious stones. The event will promote investment, strengthen value chains, and enhance market access for both established companies and emerging miners. He urged players such as Savvy Gems to continue raising Zambia’s profile internationally.
Savvy Gems Managing Director, Mr Milimo Zumbunu, said the new showroom aims to display high-quality Zambian jewellery while demonstrating the country’s complete value chain, from sourcing and processing to graded, polished products that can compete with established global brands. The showroom will also serve as a meeting point for buyers, investors, and industry partners.
Mr Zumbunu added that the company is working to address challenges faced by small-scale miners, particularly access to capital for equipment. Savvy Gems is engaging exhibitors at the expo to explore tools and machinery best suited to improve production capacity.
In addition, the company is advancing skills development through its Lapidary School, which trains local artisans in cutting and polishing gemstones to international standards. “Our mission goes beyond selling jewels; we are telling the authentic story behind them,” he said. “The artistry and heritage of Zambia must be seen, respected, and preserved.”
The event highlights Zambia’s growing visibility in the global gemstone market and reinforces the country’s push towards value addition and local beneficiation.
