Zambia Secures Energy Future with US$245 Million Solar Investment

Zambia’s push for energy diversification has received a major boost with the groundbreaking of a US$245 million, 200-megawatt solar power project in Chief Moono’s Chiefdom in Mumbwa District.

Minister of Energy, Honourable Makozo Chikote, MP, who officiated at the ceremony, said the project marks a significant milestone in the country’s transition towards clean energy and reduced dependence on hydropower.

He noted that a number of renewable and thermal projects currently under construction nationwide are expected to begin supplying power to the national grid within the coming months, easing electricity pressure for households and businesses.

The Minister thanked traditional leaders for offering land to investors, emphasising that such collaboration is driving critical infrastructure that will benefit present and future generations. He also expressed empathy with citizens experiencing reduced electricity hours and reaffirmed Government’s commitment to delivering sustainable, long-term solutions that stabilise supply and support economic growth.

ZAHU Energy Solutions Limited (ZESL) Chief Executive Officer, Ignitius Hangoma, said the Mega Solar Plant is a joint venture between Zambian and Hungarian investors, reflecting growing international confidence in Zambia’s energy reforms and investment climate. The project will include a five-kilometre transmission line linking the plant to ZESCO’s Nambala Substation, as well as battery storage technology to enhance supply reliability.

Construction is expected to take 18 months and will create more than 200 direct jobs, alongside business opportunities for local suppliers. Hangoma added that the company will implement environmental and sustainability measures, and support community development initiatives such as access to clean water and assistance to nearby schools.

The investment, he said, aligns with Vision 2030 and demonstrates Government’s commitment to matching policy vision with concrete action.

Project financiers described the investment as a symbol of strengthened cooperation and friendship between Zambia and Hungary.

ZESCO Acting Managing Director, Eng. Wesley Lwiindi, said the project will cover 236 hectares and incorporate battery storage to support grid stability, thereby reducing the nation’s overreliance on hydropower. He noted that the initiative will also promote skills development and act as a social and economic enabler for the local community.

“ZESCO is not only a power utility; we are a strategic partner in national development. This project demonstrates the strength of collaboration between the private sector and public institutions,” Eng. Lwiindi said.

Central Province Minister, Honourable Mwabashike Nkulukusa, assured investors that the project is secure and will deliver long-term benefits. He highlighted that recent policy reforms in the energy sector are already yielding results and encouraged more investment in Central Province.

He further called on local communities to safeguard the project as a shared asset for future generations.

Mumbwa Member of Parliament and Southern Province Minister, Honourable Credo Nanjuwa, welcomed the development as a major milestone for the district and the nation.

He commended traditional leaders for facilitating investment and thanked President Hakainde Hichilema for fostering an investment-friendly environment that is unlocking employment opportunities and social benefits in rural communities.
