ZCSA Urges Caution Following Fatalities Linked to Illicit Beer in Kalomo
The Zambia Compulsory Standards Agency (ZCSA) has expressed deep concern over the reported deaths of three individuals in Kalomo District, Southern Province, after consuming a suspected illicit beer allegedly made from methylated spirit, fertiliser, tyre mending solution, and other hazardous substances not intended for human consumption.
ZCSA, a statutory body under the Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry, is mandated by the Compulsory Standards Act No. 3 of 2017 to enforce compulsory standards to safeguard public health, consumer safety, and environmental protection. The agency, which regulates beverages among other products, is working closely with other state institutions to investigate the incident.
“Consumption of illicit beverages containing harmful substances can severely damage organs such as the kidneys, heart, and eyes, or even result in death,” said Onishias Maamba, Acting Manager – Communications and Public Relations at ZCSA.
The agency has urged the public to purchase beverages only from trusted sources and to refrain from consuming products whose safety has not been verified. ZCSA is also appealing for members of the public to report any individuals or businesses involved in the illegal production or supply of beverages to the nearest ZCSA office.
ZCSA regulates opaque beer, clear beer, potable spirits, and table wines, and emphasises that all manufacturers, importers, and traders must obtain authorisation from the agency to legally supply these products to the market. The agency has committed to intensifying enforcement and public education efforts to enhance consumer safety.
