Ministry of SME Launches Textile and Fashion Initiative to Boost Market Access for Entrepreneurs

The Ministry of Small and Medium Enterprise Development has unveiled a groundbreaking textile and fashion initiative aimed at expanding market opportunities and stimulating growth for local entrepreneurs.

The flagship programme was launched through a dynamic fashion and textile runway show, which served as a vibrant platform for Zambian designers and artisans to showcase their creativity. The event forms part of the government’s broader strategy to strengthen the MSME sector ahead of the 2025 SME and Cooperatives Indaba.

Beyond the glamour of the catwalk, the initiative featured exhibitions and partnership forums designed to promote value addition, local innovation, and enterprise growth. Designers presented collections across ten categories, including the patriotic “Zambia @ 61,” the eco-friendly “Recycling Reimagined,” and the practical “Farm & Garden Wear.”

Minister of Small and Medium Enterprise Development, Hon. Eng. Elias Mubanga, urged participants to use the event as a launchpad for investment and collaboration.

“This show is a vehicle for Zambian SMEs to reach new markets and benefit from regional opportunities such as the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA),” said Mr Mubanga. “Our focus is not just the runway, but tangible market expansion and long-term business growth.”

As part of ongoing efforts to promote Zambian craftsmanship, the Ministry is also organising free exhibitions for textile-sector SMEs and cooperatives at shopping malls nationwide during Independence Week (19–25 October 2025). These exhibitions will give local entrepreneurs direct access to consumers and potential business partners.

The initiative builds momentum towards the 2025 MSME and Cooperatives Indaba, scheduled for 30–31 October 2025, which will be graced by President Hakainde Hichilema. The Indaba is expected to serve as a key platform for driving innovation, partnerships, and investment within the SME ecosystem.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mrs Sibeta Mutelo, reaffirmed government’s commitment to empowering small businesses, noting: “SMEs are not just the backbone of our economy; they are the lifeblood of innovation, job creation, and sustainable development.”
