Zambia Accelerates Energy Transition with 16 MW Northrise Solar Project in Ndola
Zambia’s ambition to achieve 1,000 megawatts (MW) of solar-generated electricity by the end of 2025 is taking shape, highlighted by the ongoing development of the Lifesong Northrise 16 MW Solar Power Plant (Phase 1) in Ndola, Copperbelt Province.
The project, a private sector-led initiative, is expected to inject much-needed power into the national grid — helping bridge the country’s electricity deficit while supporting industrial and economic growth.
On 10 October 2025, ZESCO Limited hosted a media tour of the site to showcase its collaboration with the private sector in expanding Zambia’s renewable energy capacity.
ZESCO Board Chairperson, Mr Vickson Ncube, highlighted the importance of private sector participation in boosting energy sufficiency and reliability.
“People are building houses in Zambia. From 2022 to date, ZESCO has connected over 400,000 homes to the grid, which translates to about 350 MW of new demand. Mines are opening and require power to operate,” said Mr Ncube. “Without corresponding growth on the supply side, the system will struggle to meet demand. I sincerely commend Lifesong and their team for contributing to our collective goal of achieving energy security.”
The project is expected to be completed by December 2025, with commissioning scheduled for early 2026.
“The plant will be completed by the end of December this year, and evacuation of power will begin early next year,” confirmed Mr Dirk Fourie, the project contractor.
Lifesong is among 19 successful bidders from ZESCO’s 2024 tender for 300 MW of grid-tied solar power projects — a move aimed at accelerating renewable energy generation through private investment.
Kiyona Energy Limited Chief Executive Officer, Engineer Clement Siame, lauded the government’s efforts to promote private sector engagement through the Independent System and Market Operator (ISMO) framework.
“Today, we witness the tangible results of that vision and effort,” he said. “Lifesong stands among the successful bidders — a true testament to innovation, resilience, and the strength of collaboration.”
