Zambia Champions Social Development, Gender Equality and Human Rights at UN General Assembly

Zambia has reaffirmed its steadfast commitment to social justice, gender equality, children’s protection, and human rights during the General Debate of the Third Committee of the United Nations General Assembly.

Delivering the national statement, Zambia’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Dr Chola Milambo, highlighted the country’s proactive initiatives to promote social inclusion and equitable access to services, particularly for vulnerable populations.

He called for strengthened international cooperation to tackle persistent global challenges, stressing the need for enhanced support to the Global South in accessing social protection systems.

Dr Milambo emphasised Zambia’s focus on youth skills development and investment in programmes that foster inclusion, urging that the upcoming World Social Summit galvanise increased global support and establish robust monitoring mechanisms for social progress.

On gender equality, Dr Milambo reaffirmed Zambia’s dedication to women’s empowerment, in line with international frameworks. He also drew attention to the disproportionate impact of climate change on women and girls, highlightng the need for targeted policies to address these inequities.

The Third Committee session, which commenced earlier this month, will continue until the end of November 2025. Zambia’s statement formed part of the 80th UN General Assembly’s Third Committee General Debate at UN Headquarters in New York.
