Zambia Hosts Fourth African Human Rights and Business Forum in Lusaka

Zambia is hosting the Fourth African Human Rights and Business Forum from 7 to 9 October under the theme “From Commitment to Action: Advancing Remedy, Reparations, and Responsible Business Conduct in Africa.” The event, taking place at the Taj Pamodzi Hotel, has drawn 521 delegates from 73 countries.

Zambia’s Minister of Justice, Hon. Princess Kasune, officially opened the Forum, highlighting the need for responsible investment across the continent. “Africa is at the crossroads, seeing increased investment in its economy, which is a good thing, but it should not come at the expense of a destroyed environment and displaced or poorly compensated local communities,” she said.

The Minister urged Africans to hold both elected leaders and businesses accountable for investment decisions that affect vulnerable populations.

The Forum provides a platform for African nations to discuss homegrown solutions for balancing economic investment with human rights protections.

Yesterday, the Human Rights Commission Zambia (HRC-Z) participated in a breakaway session on “Documenting and Responding to Attacks: Addressing Gaps and Strengthening Protection of Human Rights Defenders in Africa.”

Mr. Lisbon Chaamwe, HRC-Z Research and Mechanisms Manager, stressed the importance of improved data collection and storage regarding abuses against human rights defenders, sharing Zambia’s experience in safeguarding these individuals.

The Forum continues to provide a critical space for dialogue on advancing human rights, remedy, and responsible business practices across Africa.
