UK Applauds Zambia’s Role in Global Clean Power Alliance as Green Growth Partnership Deepens
The United Kingdom has praised Zambia for joining the UK-led Supply Chain Mission of the G20 Global Clean Power Alliance, describing it as a major milestone in advancing sustainable energy and deepening economic collaboration between the two nations.
The announcement was made during President Hakainde Hichilema’s official visit to the United Kingdom, undertaken at the invitation of His Majesty King Charles III. The British High Commission hailed the visit as a “landmark moment” in the long-standing partnership between Zambia and the UK, founded on shared Commonwealth values and a mutual commitment to sustainable growth.
As part of this strengthened cooperation, the UK reaffirmed its support through the UK-Zambia Green Growth Compact, designed to unlock £2.5 billion in new private sector investment. So far, over £1 billion has already been committed, with more than 700 megawatts of renewable energy projects currently in progress across Zambia.
During his visit, President Hichilema held high-level talks with UK Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy, focusing on democracy, trade and investment, sovereignty, and global peace. Mr Lammy commended Zambia’s debt restructuring and macroeconomic stability efforts, noting that they are crucial to building investor confidence. He also expressed gratitude to the Zambian people for their support of Ukraine amid the ongoing conflict.
In addition, President Hichilema addressed UK business leaders at the Invest Africa Forum, hosted in the British Parliament by UK Trade Envoy for Southern Africa, Calvin Bailey MP. The forum showcased Zambia’s growing investment potential across key sectors such as energy, agriculture, infrastructure, technology, and tourism.
Further strengthening Zambia’s economic landscape, British International Investment unveiled Growth Investment Partners Zambia, a new financing facility aimed at empowering Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and stimulating inclusive economic development.
The UK Government reaffirmed that Zambia’s participation in the Global Clean Power Alliance signals a “new era of partnership” — one that positions Zambia as a vital player in Africa’s clean energy transition and global supply chains.
