NHIMA Introduces Mandatory Claim Bills for Health Insurance Members
The National Health Insurance Management Authority (NHIMA) has announced a new policy requiring all accredited health facilities to issue claim bills to members of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) whenever they access healthcare services.
The directive, effective from 15 October 2025, is aimed at enhancing transparency, accountability, and member confidence in the scheme. Each bill will detail the services accessed and the corresponding costs covered by NHIS, enabling members to monitor and better understand their healthcare consumption.
According to NHIMA, the move is designed to:
- Promote transparency by ensuring members clearly see the benefits and services received;
- Strengthen accountability by encouraging accurate claims and reducing billing discrepancies;
- Enhance member confidence by empowering patients with reliable information about their entitlements.
“By introducing mandatory claim bills, we are empowering members to play an active role in their healthcare journey and building greater trust in the scheme,” said King Syacika, Head of Public Relations at NHIMA in a statement.
NHIMA has urged all accredited healthcare facilities to comply with the new directive and encouraged members to always request their bills after each visit.
The Authority reaffirmed its commitment to providing affordable, quality healthcare to all Zambians, stressing that regular contributions are vital for sustaining the NHIS and guaranteeing access when needed.
