Zambia Participates in Second Africa Climate Summit in Addis Ababa

Zambia has joined fellow African nations at the Second Africa Climate Summit (ACS2), which opened today at the Addis International Convention Centre in Ethiopia under the theme “Accelerating Global Climate Solutions: Financing for Africa’s Resilient and Green Development.”

Minister of Green Economy and Environment, Hon. Mike Elton Mposha, is leading the Zambian delegation on behalf of President Hakainde Hichilema. He emphasised that Zambia’s participation highlightes the country’s commitment to shaping both continental and global climate decisions while advancing sustainable development goals.

Mr Mposha noted that the summit provides an important platform for Zambia to advocate for targeted climate finance, promote green industrialisation through renewable energy and critical minerals, and strengthen adaptation and resilience efforts, particularly in the wake of the devastating 2023/2024 drought that affected food, water, and energy security for millions.

The Minister will take part in high-level dialogues with Heads of State and Government focusing on breaking the cycle of debt, nature, and climate, as well as driving Africa’s industrialisation with renewable energy. He will also hold bilateral meetings with international partners to explore avenues of cooperation and share best practices on climate action.

The three-day summit, convened by the Ethiopian Government in collaboration with the African Union Commission, builds on the 2023 Nairobi Climate Summit and comes ahead of major international gatherings including the G20, UNGA80, and COP30.

It will culminate in the adoption of the Addis Ababa Declaration of African Leaders on Climate Change and Call to Action, expected to push for urgent delivery of the New Collective Quantified Goal on climate finance and faster operationalisation of the Loss and Damage Fund.

“Zambia remains steadfast in maximising both climate and economic benefits from our participation at ACS2, building on our past climate engagements and commitments,” Mr Mposha stated.
