Zambia and New Zealand Strengthen Cooperation in Tourism, Conservation, and Investment

Zambia and New Zealand have reaffirmed their commitment to deepen bilateral ties in tourism, conservation, and sustainable investment following a courtesy call by New Zealand’s High Commissioner to South Africa, His Excellency Philip Hewitt, on Zambia’s Minister of Tourism, Honourable Rodney Sikumba.

During the meeting in Lusaka, the two parties discussed areas of mutual interest, including tourism promotion, cultural exchange, wildlife protection, and eco-investment opportunities.

Hon. Sikumba expressed Zambia’s condolences to the Government and people of New Zealand after the recent death of a New Zealand national who was attacked by an elephant while visiting Zambia.

“As a Government, we are deeply saddened by this unfortunate loss of life. We extend our heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved family and to the people of New Zealand. The Zambian Government remains committed to enhancing visitor safety while protecting our treasured wildlife,” he said.

He added that measures such as scaling up patrols, strengthening rapid response units, and engaging local communities were being implemented to mitigate human-wildlife conflict.

The Minister also highlighted the Government’s priority on sustainable tourism, particularly eco-lodges, community conservancies, and nature-based enterprises that provide direct benefits to local people.

He highlighted the importance of community involvement in conservation, stressing that empowering local populations helps reduce conflict while creating employment and infrastructure.

His Excellency Mr Hewitt commended Zambia’s efforts and expressed New Zealand’s willingness to collaborate further. “New Zealand recognises Zambia’s vast tourism potential and values its rich natural heritage. We look forward to exploring opportunities for cooperation in sustainable tourism investment, wildlife protection, and community-based conservation initiatives,” he said.

Both governments reaffirmed their intention to build stronger partnerships that promote safe tourism, attract investment, and support communities as stewards of wildlife.

In line with Vision 2030 and the National Tourism Policy, the Ministry of Tourism aims to position Zambia as a premier eco-tourism destination in Africa, where sustainable conservation, community participation, and responsible investment drive inclusive growth and preserve natural heritage for future generations.
