500 Women and Youth in Murang’a Receive Digital Skills Training

Murang’a County has made a significant leap towards digital inclusion, with 500 women and young people receiving essential digital skills during a five-day training programme aimed at promoting economic empowerment and innovation.

Now in its third edition in the county, the initiative was delivered through a partnership between Huawei Kenya, Computers for Schools Kenya (CFSK), the Joyful Women Organization, and MaMa Doing Good. The programme focused on practical, market-relevant digital skills designed to unlock new opportunities in business, employment, and entrepreneurship.

Maureen Mwaniki, Director of Public Affairs at Huawei Kenya, said: “We are thrilled to partner with MaMa Doing Good to empower women with the digital skills they need to thrive in today’s connected world. Our goal is to ensure digital empowerment reaches women across the country, driving inclusion and bridging the digital divide.”

At the closing ceremony, organisers highlighted that digital literacy is increasingly a necessity for economic independence and resilience. Joycelyn Mwikali, Director of Corporate Services at MaMa Doing Good, added: “Digital skills are the new currency of opportunity. By equipping participants with the right knowledge, we are empowering them to harness technology for entrepreneurship, innovation, and sustainable livelihoods. This initiative goes beyond basic literacy, it is about unlocking potential and building stronger, more connected communities.”

The programme reflects a shared commitment to narrowing Kenya’s digital divide and positioning women and youth as leaders in the rapidly evolving digital economy. According to the World Bank’s 2023 Digital Inclusion Report, only 38 per cent of rural youth possess basic ICT skills, compared with 67 per cent in urban areas.

Meanwhile, the World Bank’s Future of Work report predicts that over 60 per cent of jobs in Kenya by 2030 will require advanced digital and cognitive skills, underscoring the importance of investing in digital training today.
