African Marketing Confederation Launches Africa-Specific Professional Designation

The African Marketing Confederation (AMC) has unveiled a new professional qualification, the Certified Professional Marketer (Africa) designation, or CPM(A), designed to strengthen the skills of marketers operating across the continent’s diverse business landscapes.

The designation comprises four modules – Marketing Strategy in Africa, Marketing Research in Africa, Marketing Management in Africa, and Business Management in Africa. Each module blends foundational theory with applied practice and culminates in a capstone project addressing a real-world challenge in an African market.

According to the AMC, the programme is tailored to reflect Africa’s distinct economic, cultural, and technological contexts. It incorporates case studies drawn directly from African markets, ensuring that graduates acquire tools and strategies relevant to their operating environments.

“The CPM(A) fills an important gap in professional education,” said Anisa Fielding of the IMM Graduate School of Marketing, who supported the content development. “We reviewed global models but found nothing comparable for Africa. Marketing here cannot simply replicate strategies from elsewhere – each market has its own consumer behaviours, cultural expectations, and regulatory frameworks that professionals must navigate.”

The modular course is offered remotely, allowing professionals to enrol at any time and study at their own pace. Participants may complete modules individually or pursue the full designation. Fielding explained that the course structure was designed with flexibility in mind: “Instead of long semesters, the modules are delivered as micro-credentials, combining theory with practical application. This makes it easier for working professionals to integrate learning into their daily practice.”

She further highlighted the inclusion of artificial intelligence literacy within the programme. “AI is now integral to marketing practice, just as calculators became essential in business decades ago. By embedding AI, we ensure that participants can harness these tools responsibly and effectively in an African setting,” she noted.

Applications for the CPM(A) designation are now open to marketing professionals across the continent.
