Zambia–DRC Partnership in Seed and Fertiliser Production Poised to Boost Regional Food Security

A strategic partnership between Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in seed and fertiliser production is set to play a transformative role in regional agriculture, according to Dr Oliver Kandela Bulaya, a renowned Climate Smart Agriculture expert.

Speaking on the collaboration, Dr Bulaya said the pooling of resources, expertise, and technology from both nations would significantly improve access to high-quality seeds and fertilisers.

He stressed that such advancements are critical to boosting crop yields, enhancing food production, and strengthening food security across the region.

Dr Bulaya highlighted Zambia’s agricultural model as a valuable blueprint for the DRC. He pointed to the country’s strategic investments in agricultural infrastructure and research, successful public–private partnerships in seed and fertiliser distribution, and robust agricultural extension services as key lessons for improving productivity.

“This partnership will not only increase agricultural output but also promote crop diversification, improve dietary diversity, and build resilience against climate change,” Dr Bulaya noted.

He further emphasised the potential impact on small-scale farmers, who stand to benefit from improved access to quality inputs, modern farming techniques, and new market opportunities. Training programmes and workshops under the partnership will empower farmers with the skills needed to thrive in a competitive agricultural environment.

To maximise the benefits, Dr Bulaya called for stronger public–private partnerships, inclusive planning that engages local farmers in decision-making, and targeted training to ensure effective participation.

“In working together, Zambia and the DRC can lay the foundations for a more sustainable and prosperous agricultural future for the region,” he concluded.
