WHO Donates Medical Equipment to Boost Tanzania’s Recovery from Marburg Outbreak
The World Health Organization (WHO) has bolstered Tanzania’s recovery from the recent Marburg Virus Disease (MVD) outbreak by donating vital medical equipment valued at over TZS 112 million to the Ministry of Health.
The donation, delivered to health authorities in Biharamulo District, aims to strengthen health services and reinforce the country’s preparedness for future public health emergencies.
The equipment package includes personal protective equipment (PPE), diagnostic tools, hospital beds, and emergency medical kits — all essential to restoring routine health operations in one of the regions most affected by the outbreak earlier this year.
During the official handover ceremony, Dr. Galbert Fedjo, Acting WHO Representative in Tanzania, emphasized the organization’s continued partnership with the government:
“This handover is part of a broader commitment to strengthen outbreak preparedness and response capacities in Tanzania. We are proud to stand with the Government and the people of Tanzania on the road from recovery to resilience.”
The donation is part of a comprehensive post-outbreak recovery package, made possible through funding from the Government of the United Kingdom via its Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO).
In addition to medical supplies, the support has been directed towards risk communication, psychosocial support, and training of frontline health workers in affected regions.
Receiving the equipment, Dr. Erasto Sylvanus, Director of Emergency at the Ministry of Health, expressed gratitude to WHO and its partners.
“This support comes at a critical time as we continue to strengthen our health systems and ensure our frontline workers are equipped to handle future health emergencies. We thank WHO and the UK Government for standing with us.”
Tanzania’s Marburg Virus Disease outbreak was officially declared in March 2025 and was rapidly contained through collaborative efforts led by the Ministry of Health, WHO, and other health partners.
