ZEMA Approves 259 Projects Worth Over $834M to Drive Sustainable Development

The Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) has greenlit 259 development projects valued at more than $834 million, emphasizing its commitment to economic transformation anchored in environmental stewardship.

The approvals were made during the April and May 2025 sittings of the Environmental Assessment Committee (EAC) of the ZEMA Board of Directors.

The projects span strategic sectors, including 138 in mining and mineral processing, 43 in energy, 39 in infrastructure, and 31 in manufacturing and processing—marking a significant milestone in Zambia’s journey towards sustainable industrial growth.

Among the major developments is a $140 million ultra-modern border post at Kasumbalesa in Chililabombwe District, which is expected to ease congestion, boost trade efficiency, and strengthen economic ties with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

In the renewable energy sector, a $61 million 200MW solar plant by Swarna Solar Limited has been approved for Serenje District, aligning with the country’s clean energy ambitions.

Additionally, a $19 million viral vaccine production facility will be constructed at the Central Veterinary Research Institute in Balmoral, Lusaka, to support livestock health and biosecurity.

ZEMA Board Chairperson Professor Lovejoy Malambo affirmed the Agency’s continued dedication to balancing economic progress with environmental protection.

“Our mandate remains clear—facilitating national development while safeguarding our natural heritage through rigorous environmental assessments and regulatory compliance,” he said.
