UK Praises Zambia Sugar as Model for Investment Partnership
The United Kingdom has hailed Zambia Sugar PLC as a model of inclusive, sustainable investment in Africa, highlighting it as a flagship of UK-Zambia cooperation.
This endorsement came during a high-level visit to the Nakambala factory and plantation in Mazabuka by UK Minister for Africa, Lord Edward Ray Collins.
During his Thursday visit, Lord Collins praised Zambia Sugar’s role in driving economic growth, job creation, and export earnings.
He said the company exemplifies the shared vision between the UK and Zambia, with particular focus on climate-smart agriculture, sustainable water management, and green energy solutions.
“Zambia Sugar is not just producing food; it’s generating jobs, advancing green energy, and building resilient communities,” said Lord Collins. “This is exactly the kind of long-term, inclusive investment the UK seeks to support.”
Lord Collins noted the company’s efforts to mitigate climate change through self-power generation and diversification of energy sources. He reaffirmed the UK government’s commitment to backing such investments that deliver measurable benefits to local economies and the environment.
Zambia Sugar Managing Director Oswald Magwenzi welcomed the visit, acknowledging the UK’s investment as a vital signal of commitment to Zambia’s development.
“British investment in Zambia Sugar is helping us create employment and strengthen the agricultural economy. It demonstrates that Zambia is open for sustainable business,” he said.
Lord Collins was joined by Zambia’s High Commissioner to the UK, Her Excellency Macenje Mazoka, and the British High Commissioner to Zambia, Her Excellency Rebecca Terzeon.
