Zambia Hosts First Regional Uranium Training with IAEA

Zambia will tomorrow host the first-ever Regional Training on Uranium Exploration and Mining, drawing participation from 19 African countries. The week-long event is being organized by the Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development in partnership with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Expert Mission.

The training aims to enhance the capacity of geoscientists and technical professionals across Africa in advanced uranium exploration and mining techniques. It will feature technical sessions and field visits to Zambia’s uranium deposits, providing hands-on experience in modern field methods and geoscientific data management.

This initiative aligns with Zambia’s national ambition to build its first nuclear power programme and is supported by the country’s ongoing high-resolution geophysical survey aimed at unlocking mineral potential and attracting sustainable energy investments.

The training will be officially opened on Monday, 9th June 2025, at 09:00 hours at the Government Complex in Lusaka by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Hapenga Kabeta, alongside IAEA National Liaison Officer Dr. Larry Mweetwa. The programme runs until 14th June 2025.

This was in a statement issued by Shamwinda Tembo, Principal Public Relations Officer, Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development.
