Malawi Defence Advisor Commends Zambia Air Force for Deepening Defence Ties

The Zambia Air Force (ZAF) and the Malawi Defence Force have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening military cooperation, with a renewed focus on training, capacity building, and mutual support.

During a courtesy call on Friday, 16 May 2025, Malawi’s Defence Advisor (DA) accredited to the Republic of Zambia, Colonel Philip Chitekwe, met with ZAF Commander Lieutenant General Oscar Msitu Nyoni at ZAF Headquarters in Lusaka. The two senior defence officials underscored the enduring partnership between their nations’ air forces.

Lt Gen Nyoni hailed the strong and growing ties between Zambia and Malawi, describing the relationship as one rooted in shared values, common history, and regional solidarity.

“We are one people, woven together by shared histories, values, and aspirations,” said Lt Gen Nyoni. “Our people engage in cross-border trade, education, and cultural interactions every day, without feeling like foreigners. Our military ties reflect that same spirit of unity.”

He added that Zambia has consistently stood with Malawi during difficult times—not out of obligation, but because of the brotherhood shared between the two nations. He specifically referenced Zambia’s quick humanitarian and military response during Malawi’s struggles with climate-induced disasters.

Lt Gen Nyoni expressed satisfaction with Malawi’s benchmarking of key military frameworks from Zambia in recent years. He also reaffirmed ZAF’s commitment to offering training, human resource support, and institutional knowledge to Malawi, noting ongoing programmes such as flying training and paratrooper exchanges.

In his remarks, Col Chitekwe praised Zambia for its professionalism and unwavering support, acknowledging the positive impact of the training partnership. He noted that the presence of Malawian pilot students at ZAF flying schools was a testament to the strength of the collaboration.

“This training cooperation is a game-changer for the Malawi Air Force,” Col Chitekwe said, while reaffirming his commitment to bolstering bilateral defence ties.

He also conveyed a goodwill message from Malawi Defence Force Commander, General Paul Valentino Phiri, who thanked ZAF for its continued brotherly support and readiness, even at short notice.
