Zambia Calls for Global Collaboration in Aerospace Advancement at Rome Conference

Zambia Air Force (ZAF) Commander, Lieutenant General Oscar Nyoni, has reaffirmed Zambia’s commitment to regional and global partnerships aimed at strengthening aerospace capabilities and driving national development through technological innovation.

Speaking on the sidelines of the 2025 Aerospace Power Conference in Rome, Lt Gen Nyoni said Zambia is strategically positioning itself to contribute meaningfully to the global aerospace agenda through smart partnerships.

He emphasized that Africa must assert its role in the aerospace domain as a driver of economic transformation.

“Africa must find its voice and space in the aerospace evolution as a tool for economic development,” said Lt Gen Nyoni. “No single nation can afford to operate in isolation in today’s complex security landscape. Collaboration is no longer optional—it is essential.”

He reiterated President Hakainde Hichilema’s stance that “insecurity anywhere is insecurity everywhere,” stressing the need for joint efforts to address global security threats and ensure sustainable peace.

Highlighting the future of air and space power, Lt Gen Nyoni said Zambia is investing in modern technologies such as space-based systems, cyber capabilities, and artificial intelligence, while also focusing on leadership development, ethical technology use, and personnel excellence.

“Human competence, discipline and innovation remain at the heart of future air and space capabilities,” he said.

He also pointed to the economic significance of satellite investments in areas such as agriculture surveillance, weather forecasting, logistics, and census operations, noting their potential to support Zambia’s broader development goals.

Lt Gen Nyoni praised Leonardo, the Italian aerospace and defense company, for its ongoing support to Zambia’s air force modernization. With aircraft like the C-27 and SF 260 trainer already in service, he expressed confidence in growing the partnership.

“Leonardo has proven to be a reliable and strategic partner. We look forward to acquiring more platforms to strengthen our defence forces,” he added.

The 2025 Aerospace Power Conference, hosted by the Italian Air Force, convened air chiefs and strategic leaders from across the globe to explore innovations in aerospace security and forge strategic alliances. The event emphasized the deepening bilateral ties between Zambia and Italy, particularly in defense and diplomacy.
