Zambia’s Mining Sector Posts Strong Q1 Growth, Copper Output Soars by 29.9%

Zambia’s mining sector has recorded robust growth in the first quarter of 2025, with copper production surging by 29.9% year-on-year, from 172,548.6 metric tons in Q1 2024 to 224,103.8 metric tons.

Minister of Mines and Minerals Development, Hon. Paul Kabuswe, announced the update alongside Permanent Secretary Dr. Hapenga Kabeta and key stakeholders.

The impressive performance was largely driven by Konkola Copper Mines (KCM), which recorded a staggering production increase of over 2,000%, and Mopani Copper Mines, which grew by 58.5%. Gold output rose by 41.7%, while nickel began to show recovery signs. Despite a temporary dip in emerald production due to market conditions, long-term prospects remain positive.

Minister Kabuswe also highlighted key reforms, including the operationalization of the Minerals Regulation Commission and the restructuring of the Ministry to focus on Geological Survey, Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining (ASM), and Large-Scale Investment Promotion.

The new Zambia Integrated Mining Information System (ZIMIS) has been introduced to improve licensing transparency and efficiency, running in parallel with the existing Trimble system during the transition.

Progress on the national geophysical survey has reached 60% completion in Zone A, aimed at unlocking untapped mineral resources. The government is also constructing market centers and washing plants in Mumbwa, Rufunsa, Chisamba, and Kasempa to support small-scale miners, along with a new national training program for artisanal miners.

Significant investment flows are further propelling the sector. Sinomine has launched operations at Kitumba Mine, part of its US$600 million investment, which includes a 50MW solar plant. Ivanhoe Mining is set to begin exploration in three districts, expanding Zambia’s mineral development footprint.

Minister Kabuswe reaffirmed the government’s commitment to a modern, transparent, and inclusive mining sector under the leadership of President Hakainde Hichilema.
