Speaker Mutti Participates in UN Parliamentary Hearing on SDGs in New York
Speaker of the National Assembly of Zambia, Ms. Nelly B. K. Mutti, SC, MP, FAPRA, is in New York for the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Hearing at the United Nations, which commenced today at the UN Headquarters.
Ms. Mutti is among the key panelists at the opening session, discussing the theme: “Scaling up action for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): finance, institutions, and politics.” The hearing is set to address pressing global challenges, including low awareness of SDGs at the national level, parliamentary engagement, tax reforms, debt crises, and international trade hurdles.
The discussions align with the Pact of the Future, adopted in September 2024, and are aimed at accelerating progress toward achieving the SDGs. Zambia’s participation is seen as vital in strengthening foreign policy, promoting national interests, and contributing to global sustainable development efforts.
Ms. Mutti is also expected to speak in another session titled “The deep challenge of the SDGs: Mobilizing political will,” which will explore political barriers hindering the effective implementation of the SDGs through legislation and budget allocation.
On February 12, the Speaker participated in the Third Meeting of the Preparatory Committee (PrepCom) for the Sixth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament, scheduled for July 29–31, 2025, in Geneva. The PrepCom meeting gathered parliamentary leaders and experts to discuss key preparations for the upcoming global Speakers’ Conference.
Meanwhile, Zambia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Dr. Chola Milambo, urged Speaker Mutti to leverage the legislative, representative, and oversight functions of the National Assembly to drive SDG implementation.
He also reaffirmed the Permanent Mission’s commitment to closer collaboration with the Zambian Parliament in achieving sustainable development objectives.
The IPU, founded in 1889, is the world’s first multilateral political organization, dedicated to promoting peace, democracy, and sustainable development. Speaker Mutti is accompanied by Mongu Central MP, Hon. Oliver Amutike, Deputy Clerk – Administration, Mrs. Loveness Mayaka, and other National Assembly staff.
