Namibia Mourns the Passing of Founding President Dr. Sam Nujoma
Namibia is in mourning following the passing of its Founding President and revered national leader, His Excellency Dr. Sam Shafiishuna Nujoma. President Nujoma passed away at the age of 95 on February 8, 2025, at 23h45 in Windhoek after being hospitalized for medical treatment and observation.
President Dr. Nangolo Mbumba announced the somber news to the nation, describing the loss as a significant blow to the foundations of the Republic of Namibia. “It is with utmost sorrow and sadness that I announce to the Namibian people, our African brothers and sisters, and the world at large, the passing of our revered freedom fighter and revolutionary leader,” he stated.
Dr. Nujoma, a prominent figure in Namibia’s fight for independence, led the country’s liberation struggle and played a pivotal role in achieving freedom from colonial rule on March 21, 1990. As the nation’s first president, he dedicated his life to building a unified and progressive Namibia.
His leadership during and after the struggle for independence laid the groundwork for Namibia’s sovereignty, democracy, and national development. President Mbumba paid tribute to Nujoma’s legacy, emphasizing his relentless efforts to inspire Namibians to rise and take ownership of their nation.
During this period of national mourning, President Mbumba expressed gratitude to the medical team that cared for Dr. Nujoma and thanked Namibians and international well-wishers who sent prayers and messages of support.
He extended heartfelt condolences to the Founding First Lady, Her Excellency Kovambo Nujoma, their children, and the extended Nujoma and Kondombolo families.
The Namibian government, in consultation with the Nujoma family, will announce a period of national mourning and burial arrangements in due course.
As the nation reflects on the extraordinary contributions of Dr. Sam Nujoma, Namibia stands united in honoring a leader who shaped its history and identity. His enduring legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.
