BHP Showcases Capacity Building Model for Emerging Miners at Mining Indaba
The Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited (BHP), a global mining powerhouse, has expressed interest in sharing its technical expertise with Zambia’s mining sector to bolster capacity among emerging miners.
During a bilateral meeting at the ongoing Mining Indaba in Cape Town, BHP’s Head of Government Relations, Brenden Augustin, highlighted the company’s Capacity Building Model designed to support artisanal and small-scale miners with essential mining knowledge.
The initiative aims to address challenges such as informal mining activities and child labor, paving the way for sustainable mining practices.
BHP also expressed keen interest in Zambia’s green energy minerals, particularly copper, coal, and fertilizer production, as part of its strategic focus. The company is currently assessing potential investment opportunities to partner with the Zambian Government and is exploring possibilities in the Kalahari and Katanga basin regions.
Zambia’s Mines and Minerals Development Minister, Hon. Paul C. Kabuswe, welcomed BHP’s interest and encouraged the company to utilize data from the ongoing aerial survey conducted by X-Callibur.
He stressed the importance of establishing a clear framework to guide the collaboration, underscoring Zambia’s commitment to fostering diverse and mutually beneficial partnerships with global investors.
