New Climate Finance Initiative Empowers Local Communities in Zambia
On 21 January 2025, a transformative collaboration between organisations such as WWF Zambia, PPHPZ, and the VCA programme launched the Next Level Grant Facility (NLGF) at the Mulungushi International Conference Centre.
This €318,000 grant initiative is designed to support climate action and conservation efforts, directly benefiting 100,000 community members across Zambia.
The launch event saw Her Royal Highness Chieftainess Muwezwa, Chairperson of the VCA National Advisory Committee, speak on the importance of empowering local communities to tackle climate challenges.
With only 10% of climate finance reaching the grassroots, the NLGF’s streamlined application process saw an overwhelming response, with 1,200 community groups applying for grants.
Honourable Mike Mposha, Minister of Green Economy and Environment, expressed full government support, highlighting the initiative’s alignment with Zambia’s drought relief efforts affecting millions.
The grants, awarded to 55 community groups across 12 districts, demonstrate a significant step towards fostering inclusive, community-driven climate action.
