IBA Reaffirms Commitment to Strengthening Zambia’s Broadcasting Sector
The Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA) Board Chairperson, Mr. Chikosola Chuula, recently held an end-of-year press briefing where he provided a comprehensive overview of the Authority’s progress and outlined its strategic plans for the future.
Key highlights included the IBA’s successful implementation of broadcasting guidelines, which have significantly improved Zambia’s broadcasting landscape. Enhanced adherence to regulations, including timely license renewals and the upgrade of station infrastructure, has contributed to the sector’s growth.
Mr. Chuula also commended the Government’s initiative allowing broadcasting stations to acquire modern equipment at reduced costs, which has helped enhance broadcast quality across the nation. As a result, Zambia now boasts 190 operational radio stations and 66 television stations, with community-based stations playing a vital role in bridging the rural information gap.
In terms of professional development, over 200 participants from 104 stations benefited from workshops focused on journalism fundamentals, media ethics, and operational efficiency.
However, the sector faced challenges this year, notably power shortages caused by drought. This led to operational disruptions and decreased advertising revenues. To mitigate the effects, the IBA introduced a “cooling-off window” that allows stations to reduce costs during power outages.
Looking ahead, the IBA plans to digitize its operations, improve financial transparency, enhance content monitoring, and finalize new broadcasting regulations aligned with the anticipated IBA Act. Furthermore, the Authority is set to reward compliant stations in a bid to promote excellence within the sector.
As part of its commitment to recognizing outstanding efforts, the inaugural IBA Recognition Awards were held to honor stations excelling in compliance. The awards saw Chikuni Radio recognized for community radio compliance and Radio Phoenix for commercial radio compliance.
The IBA’s leadership has reaffirmed its dedication to fostering a dynamic and innovative broadcasting environment, ensuring that the sector continues to thrive in Zambia.
