Zambia’s Mining Sector Unites for Enhanced Mine Rescue Standards
Mine rescue teams from ten leading Zambian mining companies recently convened for a collaborative training session at First Quantum Minerals’ Kansanshi Mining site in Solwezi District. The training aimed to improve safety and rescue capabilities across the nation’s mining sector.
The event marked a significant stride toward standardizing safety protocols, with a focus on encouraging a unified approach to mine rescue operations.
Kansanshi Mine Technical Manager Clayton Reeves emphasized the importance of industry-wide collaboration, stating, “Shared safety knowledge and teamwork are critical for protecting lives in our industry.”
Representatives from participating mines praised the training’s advanced techniques. Remmy Chanda from CNMC Luanshya Copper Mine lauded the session, remarking, “This training has greatly expanded our knowledge and equipped us with modern rescue skills.”
Gabriel Zulu, President of the Zambia Mine Rescue Association (ZMRA), expressed gratitude to Kansanshi Mining for hosting the session. He commended the site’s state-of-the-art facilities for equipping teams to tackle modern safety challenges.
The event brought together copper mines from the Copperbelt and Munali Nickel Mine from Mazabuka, showcasing a diverse range of underground and surface mining operations.
The benefits of this initiative extend beyond mine sites, as rescue teams also play a vital role in responding to community emergencies, such as road accidents in mining towns.
