Zambia Launches Nationwide Free Public Wi-Fi Initiative
The Government of Zambia has launched the ZamFree National Public Free Wi-Fi Initiative, a step aimed at bridging the digital divide and empowering citizens.
The rollout began simultaneously at Lusaka’s Intercity Bus Terminus, Kapiri-Mposhi Bus Station, and Kitwe’s Chisokone Market.
Minister of Technology and Science, Hon. Felix Mutati, highlighted the initiative’s goal of creating a digitally inclusive Zambia.
“This initiative targets key public spaces to provide marketeers and travelers with online tools and resources, boosting their businesses and journeys,” he said.
Representing the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, Permanent Secretary Mr. Nicholas Phiri emphasized the role of digital transformation in streamlining local governance and service delivery.
Ms. Kusobile Kamwambi, Head of the Presidential Delivery Unit (PDU), noted that this project aligns with Vision 2030 and the Eighth National Development Plan, aiming for 80% internet penetration by 2026.
The initiative, a collaboration between government ministries and technology partner inq.Digital, will connect citizens to over 320 government services through the Government Service Bus (Zamportal), fostering transparency and economic growth.
Regional Managing Director of inq.Digital, Mr. Duncan Pie, pledged reliable bandwidth at pilot sites, reinforcing the commitment to national digital inclusion.
