FQM Supports Launch of National Snakebite Guidelines
The Ministry of Health, in collaboration with First Quantum Minerals (FQM) and Snake Safety Zambia, has unveiled the National Snakebite Prevention and Management Guidelines, marking a critical step in addressing the pressing issue of snakebites in Zambia, especially in rural areas.
Speaking at the launch, Lusaka Provincial Health Director Dr. Simulyamana Choonga, on behalf of Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary Dr. Kennedy Lishimpi, emphasized the importance of the guidelines in strengthening healthcare standards and boosting public confidence in snakebite treatment.
FQM Trident’s Lead for Wildlife and Forestry Conservation, Dr. David Squarre, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to public health and safety, highlighting their support in publishing both the guidelines and the book Snakes and First Aid in Snakebites in Zambia through the Trident Foundation.
“The guidelines are a significant milestone in standardizing healthcare and addressing snakebite challenges, particularly in underserved rural areas,” said Dr. Squarre.
Dr. Lishimpi underscored the urgency of improving access to antivenom, revealing that only 15% of healthcare facilities currently treat snakebites with antivenom, and just 10% have it in stock.
He urged healthcare facilities to prioritize antivenom procurement and described snakebites as a socio-economic threat, particularly for rural farmers, children, and livestock herders.
“The launch aligns with WHO’s goal to halve global snakebite fatalities by 2030. These guidelines will save lives, protect livelihoods, and provide a roadmap for managing this serious public health challenge,” he said.
