Smart Cities to Propel Zambia’s Economic Growth, Says Liquid Intelligent Technologies CEO
In an increasingly interconnected world, smart cities are emerging as the blueprint for sustainable, efficient, and digitally empowered urban spaces. According to Mark Townsend, CEO of Liquid Intelligent Technologies Zambia, the nation’s strategic embrace of smart city initiatives could unlock significant economic growth, fostering a more connected, safer, and efficient society.
Townsend highlights the transformative potential of integrating smart city technology into Zambia’s urban framework. “Connectivity underpins the success of smart cities,” he says, explaining that seamless, reliable access to the internet allows for advanced applications across sectors, enhancing residents’ quality of life and supporting the government’s National Digital Transformation Strategy.
Zambia’s smart city momentum is fueled by Liquid’s expansive network, which stretches over 110,000 kilometers across Africa. Recently, the company expanded its fibre backbone to connect Luanda, Angola, directly to Lusaka via Chavuma. This 2,500-km route delivers affordable, high-speed internet to millions, promoting digital inclusion and enabling real-time access to critical services.
Beyond just connectivity, Liquid’s infrastructure supports smart technology with applications like surveillance equipment, safety cameras, and smart poles equipped with 4G and 5G base stations. In a landmark move, Liquid recently launched public Wi-Fi in Livingstone, granting residents and tourists access to cost-effective internet at key public locations, including the iconic Victoria Falls.
“By extending fibre-to-the-home and private LTE networks to suit both households and enterprises, Liquid is driving Zambia’s digital transformation journey,” Townsend remarks. With over 6.5 million internet users in the country and growing demand from households, small businesses, and large enterprises, scalable solutions are a priority.
The shift towards a digital Zambia is evident across various sectors, from finance and retail to logistics and mining. Enhanced connectivity fosters innovation, improves operational efficiency, and builds resilience within these industries, ensuring they remain competitive on the global stage.
“Zambia’s journey towards becoming a digitally enabled economy is one we’re proud to support,” Townsend says. “Through connectivity, we’re empowering citizens and businesses alike to contribute to Zambia’s growth while fostering an inclusive society where no one is left behind.”
