Zambia Elected Vice-Chair of Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group

Zambia has been elected as the Vice-Chair of the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG), a significant role within the Commonwealth’s governance structure. CMAG plays a crucial role in upholding Commonwealth values and promoting democracy, human rights, and the rule of law across its 56 member nations.

This notable election occurred at the conclusion of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) held in Apia, Samoa.

Representing Zambia, Honourable Mulambo Haimbe, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, now assumes a leading role in CMAG’s mission to monitor and respond to violations of Commonwealth principles. Established in 1995, CMAG has long served as the guardian of Commonwealth values, focusing on issues such as the separation of powers, respect for human rights, and constitutional rule.

As Vice-Chair, Zambia will work closely with Samoa, the current Commonwealth Chair, and other CMAG members, including Barbados, Belize, Canada, Ghana, Malta, Malaysia, Mauritius, and Rwanda. CMAG’s responsibilities include addressing unconstitutional actions, such as military coups and serious human rights abuses, with the authority to recommend suspensions or expulsions if Commonwealth values are severely threatened.

The Commonwealth Secretary-General, the Right Honourable Patricia Scotland, congratulated Honourable Haimbe, emphasizing the Commonwealth’s commitment to democratic principles and its role in addressing threats to these foundations. She noted CMAG’s proactive approach to protecting democratic institutions, civil liberties, and the rule of law.

Honourable Haimbe shared Zambia’s enthusiasm for this new role, stating, “Zambia is honored to take on this leadership role within the Commonwealth, and we stand ready to work alongside our Commonwealth family to safeguard the values we collectively cherish.”

The Zambian delegation to CHOGM included Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Etambuyu Anamela; Zambia’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Her Excellency Macenje Mazoka; and Zambia’s High Commissioner to Australia and New Zealand, Dr. Elias Munshya. Each has expressed their support for Honourable Haimbe and Zambia’s commitment to advancing the Commonwealth’s mission.

This is in a statement issued by Charles Mucholo, First Secretary – Press and Public Relations, Zambia High Commission to Australia and New Zealand.
