President Hichilema Addresses MOAZ Annual General Meeting
President Hakainde Hichilema graced the Media Owners Association of Zambia (MOAZ) Annual General Meeting and Conference held under the theme “Media Resilience in the Face of Adversity – Overcoming Energy and AI-Driven Disruptions.”
During his address, he emphasized the critical role of media in society and the government’s commitment to fostering a free and fair media environment.
In his remarks, President Hichilema highlighted the importance of effective communication about the accomplishments and ongoing efforts of the New Dawn Administration, noting a lack of visibility on these fronts. He pointed out the contrast with the previous administration, which had shut down media outlets, stating that none have been closed under his leadership.
The President acknowledged the challenges posed by drought, which has resulted in food and energy insecurity, and assured the public that the government has implemented measures to alleviate these issues. Key interventions in the energy sector include reforms to allow independent power producers and power traders, as well as initiatives like net metering and power blending.
He urged media outlets to explore self-generated electricity solutions to enhance their operations.
In a notable development, President Hichilema announced that the Bank of Zambia will soon establish a special fund to support media outlets, reinforcing the government’s recognition of the media’s value in promoting justice and accurate reporting.
However, the President cautioned the media industry about the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), acknowledging its dual nature as both an opportunity and a threat. He stressed the need for regulations governing AI to ensure it serves the public good while eliminating fake news. He called for MOAZ and the government to collaborate in creating editorial policies that prioritize truthfulness.
The Acting Minister of Information and Media and Chief Government Spokesperson, Princess Kasune, commended the media owners for their dedication to the sustainability, growth, and independence of the media fraternity.
She noted that the annual general meeting comes at a crucial time as the media landscape evolves, presenting both challenges and opportunities.
MOAZ President Costa Mwansa praised President Hichilema for enacting the Access to Information Law and expressed hope that its implementation would empower citizens to hold the government accountable.
He also urged the government to recognize the media sector as a business deserving of incentives similar to those given to manufacturing and mining industries.
