Minister of Energy Provides Weekly Update on Power Supply Recovery
Hon. Makoso Chikote, Minister of Energy, addressed the Zambian nation regarding the ongoing power deficit, expressing gratitude for the resilience shown by citizens during this challenging time. He acknowledged that September was particularly difficult, with prolonged power rationing affecting many Zambians.
The power deficit has been primarily attributed to three factors: reduced generation at the Kariba North Bank Power Station due to water allocation issues from the Zambezi River Authority, maintenance at the 300MW Maamba Energy Power Plant, and technical challenges with the power interconnector to Namibia.
Minister Chikote reported that the Maamba Energy Power Plant has completed maintenance work and is now fully operational as of October 1, 2024. He also announced that the technical faults affecting power imports from Namibia have been resolved, allowing for a normalized power supply.
With these developments, the Minister projected that Zambians can expect at least three hours of stable power supply daily for retail customers starting in October, with improvements anticipated in the coming months.
However, he emphasized that the current situation is not the government’s desired outcome, and further efforts will be made to mitigate the power deficit’s impact on the economy.
Minister Chikote also highlighted President Hakainde Hichilema’s call for private power traders to assist in addressing the crisis. He expressed appreciation for the quick responses from private sector partners, stressing that collaborative efforts are essential for navigating immediate power challenges while establishing a sustainable energy future.
