Zambia Leads Delegation at the 1st UN Tourism Africa & Americas Summit in Punta Cana

Hon. Rodney Sikumba, Minister of Tourism, has arrived in the Dominican Republic to head the Zambian delegation at the inaugural UN Tourism Africa & Americas Summit. The summit, which runs from October 2nd to 5th, 2024, aims to promote South-South cooperation through investment, education, culture, creative industries, and innovation.

Under the theme “Promoting South-South Cooperation,” the summit addresses the need for strategic partnerships to foster sustainable development, particularly in light of the global interconnectivity and cultural diversity that defines today’s world. The collaboration between Africa and the Americas is seen as vital for tackling shared challenges such as climate change and the development of creative industries.

The landmark event will also focus on strengthening diplomatic and political ties between the two regions, creating a platform for dialogue on the sustainable growth of tourism. Zambia joins other UN Tourism Member States from both regions to affirm their commitment to promoting South-South cooperation through the adoption of the Punta Cana Declaration.

The declaration aims to enhance partnerships between Latin America, the Caribbean, and Africa, highlighting the role of tourism in driving economic growth, infrastructure development, job creation, and cultural exchange.

As part of the summit, Zambia is set to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the Dominican Republic to bolster bilateral relations and foster collaboration in the tourism sector, promoting economic development for both nations.

The event is expected to pave the way for a fruitful exchange of ideas and initiatives that will benefit the tourism economies of Zambia and the Dominican Republic.
